Chapter 11: Overheard
Xionâs friends were not as eager to take part in his idea as he was, but they did all eventually agree. Ava thought that he was being stupid, but she refused to let him do it on his own. Sapphire agreed to help, but not to take part herself. Warren also agreed, but he was not eager to put himself in any danger.
Xion wanted to immediately search for whatever was attacking, but Sapphire insisted that they gather more information first. Warren pointed out that Ustama was mostly empty space and for anything to reach them would take days or weeks. To Xionâs disappointment, he agreed to gather information, he just hoped they could do it all before Aurâin was attacked.
First, Xion was going to need to find out exactly what was coming. âThe green onesâ was probably not the official name. Xion guessed that it was just what the dragon called whatever it was.
Warren was good with studying up and reading through books, so he agreed to do some research and try to find out more. Sapphire was helping him, as she was not comfortable with the other part of the plan. Xion and Ava had agreed to do the part that actually might get them into trouble.
Xion knew that there was something coming to the city, and he knew that someone inside the city had orchestrated it all. He was determined to stop whatever it was, but he needed to know more. His plan was to try to find some way to discover if the council, or anyone, knew when the trouble would arrive. If he could figure out what was coming and when, he may be able to convince someone to help him stop it.
Sapphire had pointed out that a lot of people inside Aurâin kept track of what was going on in the world, and Xion just needed a way to learn what they knew. He and Ava had agreed to be the ones who went looking for that information.
During the day, the four of them went about business as usual. They went to weapons training, where Xion was finally managing to hold his own with a sword. This, of course, prompted Gillan to introduce fighting with a shield and sword at the same time, setting Xion further back. Training with Yarlain was much better. After she was satisfied that he had mastered levitating small objects, she moved on to other spells. She taught him a spell for making a small object give off light, which he mastered in only three sessions. Then, she taught him how to conjure a small flame in the palm of his hand. She explained that it was a battle spell, and the flame could be thrown, but he should never use it inside Aurâin. That one took him almost two weeks to master.
After classes, Xion and the others would meet in the library. It was a large building near the center of town, and unlike all the other buildings he had been to so far, it was not sectioned off into rooms with staircases hidden in the corners.
